![]() This is a fashion show with a difference: it’s energy conscious. With the approach of winter, some fashion designers have added energy saving to their list of what makes a fashionable garment. They are concerned that as the days get colder, electricity demand rises. This places stress on Earth’s nonrenewable resources, such as coal and gas. “Every choice that we make, including the clothing we choose to wear, has an effect on the environment,” said the show’s organizer Nancy Martin. “That’s why our show will feature clothing and accessories that help to save energy.”
The Energy-wise Fashion Show will include new twists on old ways of keeping warm, such as funky thermal wear and brightly colored Ug boots. It will also include some more unusual ways of using energy, for example, the solar-powered backpack. This backpack allows the wearer to charge their cellphone, electronic diary, or laptop. It has a built-in plastic cell on the outside that converts energy from the sun into electrical energy. The plastic cell charges a battery inside the bag, and an adapter connects the battery to the cellphone (or other device) inside. When exposed to sunlight, the bags charge quickly. “Not only does this bag save electricity, but it also encourages people to go outside and enjoy the outdoors,” one designer said. ![]() Designers hope that their range of woolen and thermal garments will get the strongest message across to people. “Instead of turning up the heating, try putting on another layer,” said Nancy Martin. “We want to show that you can stay warm, save energy, and be fashionable too!” The Energy-wise Fashion Show will run from 12 noon until 3 p.m. this Saturday, in the town hall. |
