Double Takes Back
A Rocky Climb
On the weekends, I often go climbing at the indoor climbing wall with my friends. Getting ready to climb takes time, but it's important because the number one rule in climbing is safety!

I always wear loose clothes when I'm climbing. This makes it easier to stretch and move around. I also get hot when I'm doing a tricky move.

First, I put on my harness and someone makes sure that the straps are on correctly. They should be firm, but not too tight. When you're climbing, you need to feel comfortable.

Next, I put on my helmet and tighten the strap. The wall (and the floor) are hard places. Wearing a helmet helps to protect your head. You'd be amazed at the number of times I've hit the wall or banged my head on another climber.

Then I clip on my rope. Someone checks that the carabiner is tight enough. The climbing ropes are light, but strong. When you're twenty feet up the wall, it's good to know that the rope that's holding you could take the weight of ten other people as well.

Of course, you don't want to fall off the wall even if there is a rope holding you there. Finding good handholds and footholds is important. I always keep my chalk bag full. My hands get slippery when I'm climbing and the chalk dust helps them to stay dry. When I first started climbing, I used to wear old tennis shoes. Now I have climbing shoes with soles that have a really good grip.

When I've checked all my equipment, I'm ready to climb. I'll have fun climbing and I'll know that I'm safe.
